EDM heat shield structural model component
The ESA-developed ExoMars Entry, descent and landing Demonstrator Module (EDM) is protected during the entry phase in the atmosphere of Mars by an aeroshell made of a sandwich structure (composite skins and aluminium honeycomb) and a Thermal Protection System (TPS). The heat shield keeps the internal temperature below 170°C, which is then further reduced to about 50°C by more insulation inside the EDM.
This photo shows the 2.4m diameter conical structure, which constitutes the back side of the EDM heat shield model, before final assembly and ultrasonic testing. This test verifies the quality of the manufacturing.
