Date: 29 October 2010
Depicts: In-situ analysis of basalt rocks using a Raman spectrometer
Location: Norway
Copyright: ESA - Raman Team, AMASE

A series of tests for Raman have been carried out in simulated Martian conditions (AMASE expeditions). This photograph shows an in-situ analysis of basalt rocks at the Bjockfjord volcanic complex located in Spitsbergen Island, Norway, during the AMASE expedition of 2008.

On the left, a high resolution image of a basalt rock shows the spots identified for further analysis and on the right, the image shows a Raman spectra obtained in some of these selected spots; at spots 5 and 6, Raman detected organic b-carotene and pyroxene.
