Testing in the high-enhalpy shock tunnel at Göttingen

13 September 2011

When the Schiaparelli entry, descent and landing demonstrator module (EDM) enters the Martian atmosphere it will experience a huge heat flux as it brakes from 21 000 km/h to 1500 km/h. Tests have been performed to model the behaviour of the module in these circumstances.

This video shows a high-enthalpy shock tunnel test of an EDM model in the high-enthalpy shock tunnel at the HEG facility, Göttingen, Germany.

The test campaign, conducted in 2009, determined the heat flux distribution on the front and back sides of the EDM during the hypersonic entry phase. This was measured by exposing a model of the EDM (180 mm in diameter) to a high-energy flow representative of the conditions expected during entry into the Martian atmosphere.
