Interior view of the drill

Date: 17 September 2012
Depicts: Interior view of the drill

This photograph shows the interior of the ExoMars rover drill body.

A number of elements can be clearly identified: the three drill extension rods (dark grey cylinders); the linear motion actuator mechanism (left bottom); the drill’s main rotation actuator mechanism (centre back) - this executes the drilling; the rod magazine actuator mechanism (right bottom) - this rotates each element into place.

This model is a pre-engineering qualification model. The photograph was taken during a test campaign, carried out in summer 2012, that will lead to the manufacture of the drill's qualification model in 2013.
