An X-ray source irradiates the surface of the specimen and a detection system (Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) in this case) is placed on the perimeter at the other side of the specimen. The pattern of the diffracted photons collected on the detector array allows the identification of the minerals and their chemical composition.
