The red button on this unit is the Launch Abort Button, which can be used to halt a launch up to 3 seconds before liftoff.

At Baikonur, the Proton launch control team are located in a bunker, less than 1 km from the launch pad. This is also where the ExoMars 2016 launch campaign manager sat, ready to stop the launch if it was necessary.
